The music of Mali's anthem is based on an old folk tune, possibly dating from the Mali Empire of the 13th century. The anthem is in the European march style of anthem, fitting as it is a former French colony, France being the originator and most famous example of that anthem style. Despite the title commonly being given as the first line of either the chorus or the first verse, the anthem's official title is "Le Mali".
