Bulgaria's first anthem, first used during the war of independence at the time that Bulgaria was a principality within the Ottoman Empire, was a piece entitled "Shumi Maritsa", adapted from a German popular song. The royal anthem, adopted upon full independence in 1908, was used for the tsar.
