The first Mozambiquan anthem, written and composed by Justino Sigaulane Chemane, is entitled “Viva, Viva a FRELIMO”, FRELIMO being the main political party which brought the nation to independence in June 1975. However, after multi-party elections in 1992, the lyrics were deemed to be inappropriate for a multi-party nation, so the anthem was usually performed without words. A contest was initiated in 1997 for a new anthem and “Patria Amada” became the new national anthem on April 30, 2002.
