Like other republics of the Soviet Union at the time, Kazakhstan (known as the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic at this time) had its own anthem, which was in use until shortly after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Unlike most former republics, the melody of the anthem of the SSR was retained for the newly independent state's national anthem.
